You need to use it because the system contains oil that stops the rubber seals from shrinking and drying out. The oil is carried round the system by the gas in the system.

Not unless you've had it set on front screen demist, then the AC wont cut in! unlike AC systems CC will not run the AC pump when you call for heat UNLESS you set it to front screen demist when it switches on the AC to speed up the process

Vehicle systems will lose a certain amount of refrigerant over time, mainly because it has flexible hoses fitted in the system and the wall make up of these hoses are not 100% leak free. The other main reason for a system losing its charge is us! If the system is not run on a regular basis the oil in the system does not get circulated with the refrigerant and the system seals dry out and leak - particularly the compressor shaft seal. The majority of systems once proven leak free can simply be vacuum de-hydrated and re-charged with some system oil replaced in the process.

vr6, u sure about that?

The Air con on mine has been coming on during the winter (as long as its above 5deg) when I require heating, without the screen demist button being pressed. I can hear the compressor engage/dis-engage when stationary.

If you look further you will find that the A/C system fitted on Galaxys' and it's variants is very, very, very unreliable.

You have probably done nothing wrong, it's a crap system and you will be expected to pay out for repairs from time to time.

I'm sure someone will back me up on this.

However, it's a known fact that if you leave the CC running all year round, things appear to last longer.

 WATS...................cc mean.......................am thick!

Sorry about that, I sometimes get carried away with abbreviations.

There was one post on this forum about A/C and I think it had around 1,000 posts last time I looked.

I always leave my CC (Climate Control <_< ) on auto all year round.

if i use cc auto 22%c...............wont i use a lot more fuel though?

i normally just heat her up as required or cool her down in summer.

i dont see why people would wanna leave a/c on all the time?

Posted

I don't seem to notice that much difference on fuel consumption. Like you I have a diesel and I still get aroung 40mpg around town.

If my A/C compressor was to seize through lack of use I wouldn't get much change out of

To echo others here, it's always been my understanding from this forum that the A/C runs full-time as long as Climate Control is switched on, even in winter. The CC system works by mixing hot air and chilled air to deliver the chosen temperature.

am pleased its nowt av dun to mi gal................considering auto 22%c for normal everyday use.

I think a lot of people get confused about the term 'air con'.... thinking that it means cooling only.

a climate control system heats as well. putting it very simply, the system works in reverse when heating is called for. (in that the evaporator coil gets hot instead of cold)

either way, by having it on 'auto' all year round, you are circulating the all important compressor oil and so keeping the system happy.

admitedly the galaxy air con is not a great system in the first place, but apart from a couple of vacs and charges, mine has been fine for over five years, (famous last words)

and forget about the eco warriors who say it drinks more fuel...... the cost of a compressor change will probably take 50 years to re-coupe in fuel saving. ?!?! (and probably is cheaper than the drag of an open window in the summer..(me ?trolling ?! haha)

Hi m8

I had similar problem with my aircon, the display flashed a couple of times, when ignition was switched on. When i tried my aircon i could hear a hissing noise behind glove compartrment, so I knew my system was ok, all it needed was a top-up of refridgerant, cost me

:( great advice thank you guys!!!!!!!!

will let you know wats wat later?

The other big advantage of having air con (manual like mine or climate control) on during the winter is that it helps keep the windows clear as it removes the moisture from the air.

When its damp the car mists up from the rear slowly towards the front when it is switched off.
